Carbon Literacy Training Resources
What is Carbon Literacy?
Carbon Literacy® is a globally unique education programme, providing climate change learning that leads to positivity and action towards reducing carbon emissions. Recognised by the UN at COP21, Carbon Literacy is a day’s worth of learning and action planning, and has been co-created, reviewed, and developed over a decade by The Carbon Literacy Project.
As of February 2026, over 152,435 individuals from over 13,697 organisations are Carbon Literate.
GMAST Carbon Literacy Training
GMAST has a longstanding relationship with the Carbon Literacy Project. Over the last 10 years that included developing Carbon Literacy Training for volunteers and cultural organisations with the collaborative support of GMAST member HOME and Manchester City Council. This training was delivered to 100 members of GMAST, and five European city partner participants of C-Change Transfer Network Partnership.
We have since developed the GMAST Carbon Literacy offer in order to increase the opportunity for network members to deliver the training themselves, enabling the cultural sector of Greater Manchester to take direct climate action, upskilling the sector in climate awareness, and influencing positive change aligned to local targets.
This new offer takes the form of the GMAST Culture Sector Toolkit.
GMAST and Carbon Literacy
This GMAST Shareable Course is a ready-to-use Carbon Literacy course for any cultural or creative organisation in Greater Manchester. Developed with contributions from experienced Carbon Literacy trainers Alison Criddle and Robin Lyons (Ergon Theatre), this course can be used to roll out Carbon Literacy training within your organisation or network.
The materials are infused with the core values of GMAST and The Carbon Literacy Project – climate justice and collaborative action. They contain a wealth of valuable information, motivating case studies, and engaging activities, to support people working in the sector to take action, reduce emissions, and speak confidently about climate change.
What’s included
This course includes a full slide deck, trainer guidance, activity instructions, and everything else needed to deliver great Carbon Literacy training.
