Local (GM) Resources
Julie’s Bicycle, Manchester City Council, and GMAST previously developed a Zero Carbon Culture guide for Manchester. It’s a great jumping off point for considering the impact areas of our work and how to make plans to reduce impact.
Event organisers, suppliers, service providers and venues can also download sustainable events guides for:
major outdoor events
small outdoor events
indoor events
community events
food and drink traders
production suppliers
waste and cleansing services
Zero Carbon Culture Guide
Manchester faces a defining moment.
The city set a science-based target to reach zero carbon by 2038 and, while our direct emissions have fallen by 48% between 2005 and 2023, they have not fallen line with our ambition, and we risk exceeding our carbon budget by the end of 2030. We need to accelerate our efforts significantly. Below is a link to access the 2025-2030 Manchester Climate Ready “The Plan”, the Manchester Climate Risk Assessment, and information surrounding Adaptation in Manchester.
Manchester Climate Ready: The Plan
Manchester Climate Ready (MCR) is a network of stakeholders in the public, private and charitable sectors collaborating with local people to create a city where climate action improves lives, drives prosperity and restores nature. This includes GMAST who form the culture sectors contribution as a part of the Manchester Climate Ready Partnership.
MCR ensures that Manchester maintains a science-based approach to climate change that is in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, has a robust climate change strategy and targets, and provides evidence-based reporting on the city's progress towards its climate goals. MCR provides independent expertise to help accelerate change, champion the delivery of effective climate action, engage and influence stakeholders and communities to act, and seek to establish Manchester as a world class city for action on climate change.
Manchester Climate Ready
Like the rest of the country, Greater Manchester faces major environmental challenges that threaten the health and prosperity of our city-region.
Urgent action is needed to tackle carbon emissions and reverse the decline of the natural environment across the city-region. To have a significant impact on our carbon emissions, we must change the way we heat our homes and modify the way that we move people, goods and services across the city-region. We also need to support nature recovery and encourage sustainable lifestyle and business changes.
The new Five-Year Environment Plan, launched in December 2024 at the annual Greater Manchester Green Summit, outlines how meeting our long-term environmental vision – to be carbon neutral by 2038 – is still achievable, but will take collaborative action from organisations, groups and individuals across the city-region. No one individual or group can solve the problem of climate change alone - everyone has a role to play in making Greater Manchester a greener place for all.
